Discover Brazil's Wild Wonderland
This YouTube video is a local news segment (in Portuguese) showing the 2012 carnaval in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul. It's one of the biggest annual events in the Pantanal region, and is held every year in February. It's not as big or as glamorous as Rio de Janeiro, but it still has most of the same elements … with the advantage that its not as crowded and there's more opportunity to take part.
As with the Rio Carnaval, it consists of presentations and parades by competing groups (bloco or escola in Portuguese). The performance is judged on their dance, music, costumes, and floats. There's generally different theme or subject for each year's performance. These parades take place in a street that's been specially prepared for the carnaval - with many visitors arriving from over towns and cities in the region, and beyond.
