This is a local news segment (in Portuguese) showing life for the Pantaneiro cowboys of the Pantanal (also known as peão-boiadeiro or vaqueiros). Although the old style cattle rides are becoming rarer due to the advent of modern cattle trucks, some rides still occur. This video shows a cattle ride near the town of Miranda. The greatest necessity for these rides is the Pantaneiro horse (which is what most of the reporter's interviews are about). This is a unique breed descended from wild horses that escaped from Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the mid-16th century. They bred and adapted to the environment - being more resistant to tropical diseases and able to survive the aquatic landscape.
